Being thankful and remembering

READ :

In Joshua 4 in the Bible we can read about God making a way for the Israelites, cutting off the water of the Jordan river so that they could pass across, carrying the presence of God in the ark of the covenant. Joshua instructed the people to take twelve stones from the water to represent the twelve tribes and to position them where the feet of the priests carrying the ark has stood.

Joshua ‘said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever.”’

DO and REFLECT:

Create an area of remembrance

Sometimes it is helpful to have physical reminders of God’s goodness and how we have seen Him move in our lives before. This can especially encourage us in times like now when situations are hard and we may feel confusion and uncertainty over our lives and the events around us.

We invite you to create your own memorial to God and His goodness. You could build one using stones in your garden. You could use a jar and fill it with sweets, and when you take one out, thank God for something he has done.

You may want write on pieces paper to draw or write on them, and put your thanks in your jar for later. Or you could get creative with any other materials or items that you have available!

In each instance reflect on God’s nature- what do any answers to prayer or thanksgiving in circumstances show you about who He is?
